Examples of Typical Ring Packs

Essentially, piston ring designs are governed by performance requirements. These in turn depend largely on the underlying technical and commercial conditions in the passenger car gasoline, passenger car diesel and truck segments and on customer-specific field experience.

The specific demands of the engine models are reflected in the design criteria for piston rings.

Typical designs for each of the market segments are presented and specific problem solving strategies are indicated.

The design requirements for piston rings for passenger car and truck engines are dictated by the need to meet legal emissions standards. This gives rise to the demand for extremely low blowby and oil consumption levels over very long operating times. With optimized designs and manufacturing processes, piston rings can make a major contribution.
  Passenger Car Gasoline Engines
Top Groove:
Barrel-faced rectangular ring,
Material: nitrided steel,
Axial width 1-1.2 mm
2nd Groove:
Taper faced Napier ring or taper faced ring,
Material: grey cast iron,
Axial width 1.2 - 1.75 mm, Uncoated running face
3nd Groove:
3-piece oil control ring, comprising 2 steel rails and an expander-spacer, Designs:
Expander-spacer untreated or nitrided, Steel rail with chromed running face, alternatively nitrided surface
Axial width 2.0/2.5 mm,

Alternative: 2-piece coil spring loaded oil control ring,
Material: grey cast iron or profiled steel, Running face uncoated or nitrided


  Passenger Car Diesel Engines
Top Groove:
Rectangular ring or keystone ring, Asymmetrically barrelled running face,
Material: nodular cast iron, Running face coated with highly wear resistant CKS coating,
Axial width 1.75 mm - 3.5 mm (depending on bore diameter, pressure loading, ring type)
2nd Groove:
Taper faced ring or taper faced Napier ring,
Materail: highly waer resistant alloyed grey cast iron,
Axial width 2mm
3nd Groove:
Coil spring loaded oil control ring,
Material: grey cast iron or profiled steel, Running face chromed or nitrided,
Axial width 2 - 3 mm

  Truck Diesel Engines
Top Groove:
Keystone ring, asymmetrically barrelled running face, material: nodular cast iron or steel,
Running face coated with highly wear resistant CKS coating,
Axial width 2.5 - 4 mm
2nd Groove:
Taper faced ring,
Material: grey cast iron with chromed running face,
Axial width 2 - 3 mm
3nd Groove:
Coil spring loaded oil control ring,
Material: grey cast iron / nodular cast iron or profiled steel,
Running face chromed or nitrided,
Axial width 3 - 4 mm
